Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are exposed to a literacy-rich environment in my classroom. They really enjoy the reading and writing that we do every day in our class.

I work with a diverse group of students at a gifted magnet middle school.

I teach English, Honors English, Speech and Debate, and Film Appreciation. My students range from gifted, high achieving students, to students with special needs, and those who struggle academically. Two of my classes consist of students who are not currently meeting standards. They differ in socioeconomic status and which neighborhoods they live in, which makes for very diverse classes.

My students strive to achieve success every day. They work hard to improve their skills and are an amazing group of youth to work with.

My Project

I would like to purchase a video camera and microphone so that I can record my class during Socratic Seminars, when they perform Reader's Theater and short plays, as well as during presentations and speeches. We will then use the Chromebooks to watch the films and evaluate our progress toward meeting the speaking and listening standards for English.

Students will be able to "watch" themselves learn and grow!

The purpose behind the filming will be so that students can watch a video of their own presentations and the presentations of others to see areas that they have grown and to set new growth goals for themselves.

In our class we focus on having a growth mindset. Sometimes it is difficult for students to see their growth in their ability to speak clearly and effectively. Students will be able to check their presentations for adequate volume, correct posture, clarity and content. They can celebrate their successes and determine their goals for growth.

The long term goal will be to get our class ready for public speaking for college and their future careers. Our goal will be to be interview ready by the time they leave my class.
