This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all learning English and are all recent immigrants who have come to the United States seeking a great education and unlimited opportunity. They reside in Queens, the most diverse location in the world. In our school alone, you can hear over a dozen languages spoken by more than two dozen nationalities. My students want what we all do - a safe home, good friends, good health, opportunities to learn and grow, and the chance to make a difference in the world.

My Project

Whenever we grow plants in class, my science students become very attached parents to their little green sprouting children. Every centimeter and new leaf is a celebration, and every yellow or wilted leaf a source of sadness. They really love growing plants but have no hesitation when it finally comes time to eat them! They understand that even the scrawniest bit of spinach that took weeks to grow is something that can make themselves stronger. One question during these projects is always - "why can't we grow them bigger, like those gardening devices we see on the Internet?" In my science class, students are intrigued by how someone else figured out how to do something, and how they can engineer a better way. Because my students ask for it, this Tower Garden, which is a very well-designed and successful system in many other classrooms, would fit perfectly into my class. When you think about it, figuring out how to grow a bigger, better tasting salad in less time - that really would make the world a better place.
