Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a humble, middle-class neighborhood in Texas. Although our school did not flood, many of our students were affected by the hurricane in August 2017 and are still struggling to recover. Whatever my kids are going through at home, I want our classroom to be a place where students feel comfortable and safe. While not all students have to deal with the stress of recovering from a hurricane, students around the whole country are dealing with another cause of fear, uncertainty, and stress: our nation's current socio-political climate.
My goal is to educate my students about their world while making each of them feel accepted, represented, understood, and (most importantly) loved.
The best way for me to achieve that goal is to expand my classroom library with more inclusive picture books.
My Project
A read-aloud can spark such powerful conversations in a classroom. The titles that I have selected are intended to spark conversations about diversity, inclusion, rights, social justice, and current events. Introducing sensitive subjects through picture books can help students feel more comfortable about talking openly with their peers. Young children need help navigating through things happening in their world, and picture books are a perfect way to help them!
Students will feel empowered when they see books that reflect themselves, their families, and their backgrounds.
I want my students to know that I see them and that they are respected in our classroom.
