Growing Through Gardening

My Project

My children are inquisitive, creative, and compassionate. They thrive on social interactions and hands-on activities that promote productive struggle. Our school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children being of native Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry. Even with the financial challenges impacting their lives, my students want to come to school and are excited to learn. They possess invincible grit when tackling new projects. They truly light up my life!

Gardening is a healthy, fun, and fulfilling experience that develops new skills and expands children’s knowledge about the science of growing and sustainability.

From planning, digging, planting, watering, growing, harvesting and eating their own food, children learn about the life cycle of plants. They also learn about responsibility, creativity, nutrition, health, and sustainability.

Every garden needs a foundation—ours will be this first planter box.

My children have already expressed a desire to grow a variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. One of the most important one is Kalo (or Taro). This plant is important to Native Hawaiian history and culture. It is at the core of many Hawaiian dishes as well. Help us grow by giving us a foundation for our garden!
