My school is a "city" school within a very conservative county. My students are often seen as difficult by the outside community, but they are the best and they understand the benefits of diversity and acceptance.
Within my classroom, students become part of community of learners and readers and through this environment I have gotten to know my students and their desire for change.
Two years ago I worked with my students to start a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) to help continue this welcoming environment into the entire school community.
To promote the GSA, and diversity as a whole, I have created an LGBTQ+ library in my classroom for all students to read in order to feel represented or informed. The GSA has also worked to promote awareness of LGBTQ+ issues as well as to be an important part of the school community.
My Project
The biggest benefit of this project is growing the LGBTQ+ Lending Library. The more books we have the easier it will be for our members to find a book that helps them feel represented. The lending library has quickly become something even non-members know about and students continually pop by my classroom to check out a book.
Every student deserves to be heard and that is often difficult for members of our group.
Having a microphone and speaker will allow even the most soft spoken group member to be heard during meetings or when having discussion. Often, students come to GSA excited to be with people that makes them feel comfortable and understood. This excitement sometimes creates a slightly chaotic environment. The microphone will help with focus and communication. Another tool to help with focus and relaxation is the diffuser and essential oils. Anything that could help these young people feel comfortable and calm is a total plus!
Our small group has grown over the past two years, but we are still working on becoming an important part in the school community. To do this, we participate in all available school activities. The rainbow bunting, flag, and colored paper will help us spread the word and not fade into the background.
