My students are kind, creative, and eager to learn! They love coming to school and work so hard each and every day. Their excitement for reading words, and identify numbers is the reason that I wake up and come to work each and every day!
About 25% of my students speak english as a second language, which can make learning a big challenge.
Our school is in a neighborhood that has many families that speak Spanish as a first language. Because of that, our school community is so full of culture that influences our day-to-day learning!
Reading in kindergarten is something that happens on a daily basis, multiple times a day. That could come in the form of a read aloud, or students reading in small groups. My goal as a teacher working with a large population of English Language Development students, is to make sure that they are also accessing reading in a way that is appropriate for them.
I want all of my students to have access to texts that are both on their reading level and of interest to them.
In order to achieve this goal I would have to acquire so many books! So to solve this problem I am turning to technology to bring reading in kindergarten into the digital age.
My students will use the Apple iPads to access books that they can read independently. If a student is not quite ready to read on their own they will be able to listen to stories being read to them. The iPad will be the ultimate way to differentiate independent reading time for my kindergarten students!
