Growing Stories: A Storybook Garden for Curious Readers

Help me give my students the ability to connect reading and science by planting a garden inspired by beloved storybooks.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Reese's classroom raised $178

My Project

My first graders are creative, curious, and full of wonder. They love listening to stories and asking questions about the world around them. I want to bring their learning to life through hands-on experiences that blend literature, science, and real-world discovery.

This project brings the pages of our favorite storybooks into the real world by creating a “storybook garden.” We'll read books like The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens, The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss, and Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert.

Then, we'll plant seeds, observe their growth, and connect what we read with what we see in our own classroom garden.

I’m requesting seed kits, soil, child-friendly gardening tools, planters, grow lights (for indoors), and journals for students to track their plant’s progress. We’ll also use our writing time to create garden-themed poems and nature reflections!

This storybook garden will help my students deepen their understanding of plant life cycles, while fostering a love of both reading and nature. It supports science, ELA, fine motor skills, and SEL through teamwork and reflection. Your support will help their learning grow—literally!
