Growing Social-Emotional Skills...One Page at a Time

Help me give my students the social and emotional tools they need to succeed during these difficult times!

My Students

Most of my students come from low income households, and for many, English is not their first language. Some of my students deal with significant trauma and varying challenges that stem from living in difficult circumstances. The majority of my students have been learning virtually all year, with a few starting to return to the classroom this spring. Despite these barriers, it has not stopped my students from participating in virtual and in-person learning with a bright smile and an eagerness to learn something new.

My goal for all my students is to help them develop self-awareness and self-management skills to be successful in school and in life.

As a school psychologist, I feel it is my job to help my students better understand themselves and others, so they can persevere and be proud! Right now, the focus is to teach my students how to be mindful, recognize our emotions, problem-solve issues, help others, and highlight what we are doing well.

My Project

The elementary years are a time of rapid growth for young children. Not only are students learning letters and numbers, but they should also be developing social and emotional skills – skills like how to make friends, sharing toys, and listening to the teacher. However, as a result of the global pandemic, my students are having strong feelings right now due to learning at home, being isolated from friends and family, and possibly dealing with sickness or death of a loved one. Young children can have difficulty understanding or identifying their own feelings, especially since everything is so complex right now. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is highly important for helping children to understand and manage their emotions, feel and show empathy for others, establish healthy relationships, set positive goals, and make responsible decisions.

Since my students haven't had the opportunity to be in school learning from each other or their teachers, these social-emotional books will provide my students with the resources they need to develop empathy, kindness, and help them process feelings such as worry and anger.

When students have resources that support them with examples, engagement, and modeling, they are able to internalize and use these social-emotional strategies in their classrooms, on the playground, and in life!

Because I have such a diverse group of students and it’s important that they see themselves represented, I have made sure to include books that feature a diverse set of characters. I will use these books in my weekly virtual social-emotional learning lessons in the kindergarten classes as a starting point for practicing many of these life skills.
