I teach Kindergarten at an inner-city Magnet School for Science and Technology. My goal is to teach students from very diverse backgrounds basic skills for beginning reading and writing. In order to achieve this goal, I want my students to become self-motivated learners who develop a love for school and an excitement in learning.
I think it would be wonderfully motivating for Kindergarten students to be able to make and publish their own "All About Me" books to share in reading and writing centers. By participating in an "All About Me" project, the students will find that although they may be different in many ways, they are also alike in many ways.
By using a digital camera in class and available computer technology, photo picture books could be composed and published by students. A laminating machine would allow books to be laminated for durability to be read over and over again.
Through this writing process, students will be motivated to develop and share ideas, write and edit text, and enjoy reading finished products of varied and diverse content by their classmates.
I believe all 20 students will be enthused in the learning process and find that they have much in common with classmates from different backgrounds. What an excellent way to start a school career! I also believe that the students will become enthused about reading and writing along the way.
In order to make this all possible, I am proposing the purchase of a Digital camera for classroom use, a photo-printer, and a portable Laminating Machine with paper and supplies.
