We all know that schools have become a “safe place” for many students. Students these days struggle with more emotional stresses than ever before. I think you would agree that the things that our kiddos struggle with are much heavier than what we saw as a child. The world is changing at a rapid pace! I want school to be a safe place, a place they feel like they can forget about the outside world and focus on themselves. That is why I created a “Calm Down Corner” in my classroom... but let’s be real for a minute... when you need to calm down... does it help you if someone says calm down? Nope... me either... So I’ve decided to change it up some and go with a theme. Thanks in advance for being willing to support our school.
My Project
I am creating a "garden" area that will allow students... some that have sensory issues... to have a space to go when they need to separate themselves from their peers. This area will allow the student to get away to a spot that will have various different tools for them to use to be able to refocus and get ready to rejoin the rest of their class.
The artificial grass will offer a setting that not only sets the atmosphere of a garden but also provides a sensory outlet for students that need it.
Being able to partition the area off with the curtain will help those students that need to feel like they are in a safe place and cannot be seen by other students. The various other plants, etc will help make it feel like a real garden and the fun camping chair will make a great place for them to relax and regroup.
