My students need the supplies including a compost tumbler, worm composter, rain barrel, and netting needed to start planting Saige's Garden at our school. The garden will be designed as a permaculture project and all plants will provide food or support other plants.
The students of our charter school come from diverse backgrounds and come together in our family-style school in the Florida Keys. Some come to our school with very little outdoor interactions in their lives, and some spend all of their free time outside in nature. Our goal is to expose them to the amazing environments in our backyard and to help them incorporate that into their academic and daily lives. Our school has a family atmosphere and the lack of a bus system means we see and know our parents very well and they are also a part of our school.
My Project
We are planning, along with help of local experts, the creation of an edible garden for the 2016/2017 school year and beyond. The idea of the garden is that it will function as an ecosystem (permaculture) while also providing food. The creation of the garden will be incorporated into the science curriculum as well as several other subjects. The garden is dedicated to our lovely Saige Raiche who we love and miss dearly. We need supplies including a compost tumbler, worm composter, rain barrel, and netting. We are going to learn how to support our garden by filling compost tumblers with compost from our lunch and using collected rain water from the recycled rain barrel. We will also learn how important worms and decomposers are in an ecosystem while we supply nutrients for the garden with a worm farm. The children will begin their plants with seeds in the seed starter pots as they observe a plant's life cycle. They will use garden plant netting and staples to prevent the common garden pests here in the Florida Keys - iguanas! We are excited for Saige's Garden!
