Growing Roses from the Concrete: A Place They Can Grow

My students need seat sacks to store their books and materials in. We also need an Elmo projector for shared reading so that each student is able to follow along with the book.

My Students

My school is in Ward 8 of Washington, D.C. where crime, abuse, poverty, and homelessness are prevalent. Some of our students leave school not knowing where they will sleep that night or whether or not there will be food on the table.

My students are special because despite facing challenges that no child should ever have to, they come to school every day full of love, ready to learn, with smiles on their faces.

They inspire me each day because of their perseverance and desire always put their best foot forward.

My Project

This quote makes me think of each beautiful young mind I have in my class.

"The seed must grow regardless of the fact that it's planted in stone." -Tupac Shakur

My students are the seeds. The stone represents the hardships and challenges they face. In spite of how difficult their lives may be, they are still expected to grow. My goal is to create the best possible space for this to growth to happen and make sure they have all the tools they need to reach their potential.

Each item I've requested will improve the learning experience in a different way. With the seat sacks, I want to help reinforce the concepts of cleanliness and organization. Because our classroom only has table seating, there are limited places where they can neatly store their books, materials, and supplies. The projector will allow me to make a copy of the text we are reading accessible to every student. This will help to make our Shared Reading time more effective because each student will have the ability to follow along as we read.

I'm looking forward to the opportunity to create a place for my "seeds" to grow!
