My Students
My students hail from the community of Visitacion Valley in San Francisco, it's not only a hidden gem but it's also the last original neighborhood of San Francisco! For many of my students, English is not their first language and 100% of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite the many challenges they face, my students come into my classroom full of energy and ready to learn.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and I would like to provide them the best opportunity to learn and grow as super second graders!
As a teacher, I want to foster that natural curiosity and love of learning in children and help build their confidence, by lowering their cortisol levels and providing a calm learning space that prioritizes thinking over the right answers.
My Project
Decodable readers provide accessible content for students to apply what they are learning during phonics instruction. They are reading exercises that offer children an opportunity to practice the phonic knowledge and skills they have learned in a controlled text.
Children need to practice what they have been taught, in order to internalize the new learning and to develop automaticity.
This is what decodable books do. These books will be used during small group instruction depending on specific student needs. The books are used for only a short time to help children develop good decoding skills. Once these are in place, children are ready to move on to reading wonderful rich and varied children’s literature confidently. Decodable books facilitate successful reading of children’s literature!
