When we left school on March 13, we didn't know that we wouldn't be setting foot in our school for the rest of the school year. Overnight, our school year was turned upside down. With changing projections about the ability to teach in-person next year, teachers like me are preparing for students to be out of the classroom for at least a portion of the year. I want to ensure my students have the tools they need to be successful at their fingertips.
After completing the last months of school remotely, many students will need extra scaffolding and support.
Most of my students are English Language Learners, who need explicit vocabulary lessons, quality texts, and small group instruction to support their linguistic needs. My students deserve engaging, digital books to grow as readers!
My Project
In the classroom, we work in small groups that focus on reading skills and strategies. Students each have a copy of the same text, and I can preview vocabulary, teach reading strategies, listen to students read, and boost comprehension. Guided reading is transformative for students, particularly students who need additional reading support. However, this format will look very different this upcoming school year.
This project will provide each of my students with access to high-quality, digital texts that can be used in small groups or one-on-one, both in the classroom and through distance learning.
With a Literacy Footprints Digital Reader subscription, I can lead guided reading lessons with digital texts. Students will be able to read the book on a device, while I provide support throughout the reading. We can work on vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency with books at each student's "just right" level. This tool will also provide students with additional books they can read with minimal assistance, building confidence and creating stronger readers.
