My students need a selection of high-interest, low-readability books to practice their reading skills and grow as life-long readers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, shy, inquisitive 1st graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, and 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school sponsored events.
My students desire to be challenged academically, grow exponentially, and learn mindfully.
In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they all can achieve greatness.
My Project
I have always enjoyed reading, and want my students to have access to a wide range of books to grow their passion for reading. Dr. Seuss once wrote, "“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” This is my desire for my students, that through building lifelong reading skills they will have access to many opportunities that will take them many places.
With access to a variety of high-interest, low-readability books my students will develop their reading skills, expand their imaginations, and learn about the world in which they live.
First graders enjoy reading non-fiction books about animals such as rabbits, sharks, and dinosaurs, as well as fictitious stories. Fly Guy, Elephant and Piggie, and Little Critter are some favorite series that early readers enjoy. These books will nurture their love of reading through vivid pictures, appropriate vocabulary, and engaging content. With the help of donors like you, my first graders will have memorable first grade reading moments.
