This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read" - Marilyn Jager Adams
I teach in an urban public school in the South Bronx.
Many of my students are English language learners who are just learning to speak English and need extra support to learn how to read. Many of the students come to school early for extended morning because they love to learn and love the attention they get in a small group before the regular school day begins.
My student's favorite time of the day is story time because they love listening to new stories that open up new worlds and ideas for them. First graders get excited when they meet new characters in books because they are so interested in learning about others.
They also love when they can read along on their own with a CD on the computer or in the listening center. When students read along, it helps them learn expression, fluency, vocabulary and increases their understanding of books. The CD's allow students to re-read their favorite books with support and feel the success that comes along with reading independently.
My Project
My students need read aloud books and read along books that will help them grow into successful readers.
The read aloud books I'm requesting are book that will help my students understand the different kinds of friends and families. We will use them to enhance our Social Studies unit on families and communities. Another set of read aloud books I'm requesting is about different types of feelings. I feel all these books are essential to building a tolerant classroom where children feel they can express themselves.
In addition, my students need books on CD that they can read along with to help them develop critical independent reading skills, such as: following the words on the page as they are read, and reading with proper expression and pacing. Students can also find a love for acting out these books by reading scripts with partners and performing them for others.
With the addition of these supplies to my classroom my students will be able to learn about families, friends and feelings in order to feel valued and supported in the classroom.
They will also build critical reading skills and a love of reading that will stick with them as they continue in their reading lives.
Please help me provide the books and resources that these enthusiastic First Graders need and deserve to make their First Grade year academically and emotionally successful.
