Growing our Own Food

My students need several items so they can see the transformation from seed to the food we will eat. They need 3 Hydro domes with seeds, and a root viewer garden as a way to view plants and roots underground

My Students

A Montessori classroom is full of experiences. We have pets, plants, and outdoor garden. However, what we really want it to grow healthy food IN our classroom.

I have a wonderful mix of students!

***white, black, Hispanic, bi-racial ***6, 7, 8, 9, 10 years old ***gifted to kiddos with different challenges *** poverty to professors ***different types of family dynamics. And IT WORKS!! We are a community where acceptance is expected and normal. The parents love their kids and support our school community. As I have said before . . . I am living the dream every day I walk into my classroom!

My Project

Using these hydrodomes and root viewers, the children will be able to monitor every step of the plant growth. We can see how carrots grow underground. When they are ready to harvest, we can season them with the basil we have planted in our hydro dome. I am also requesting activities which the children can continue on their carpet. (matching nutritional cards, sorting healthy food into groups) These materials will help the children make healthy choices while eating.

Being able to watch a seed grow into a radish from the roots up is not always something they can witness.

Teaching the children about healthy food can grow into a life of health and happiness.
