My students need a variety of books including high interest and fiction/non-fiction texts at differing levels to practice reading independently
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Durr's classroom raised $411

My Students
By the end of the year, I hope that my students are avid readers of various genres. Many of the books I have in my library are fiction texts at the fifth grade level. These texts are not easily accessible to my students who are not yet reading at a 5th grade level.
My school is a low income school in East Oakland.
We do not have a school wide library. Deep East Oakland is known as a "book desert", lacking libraries and bookstores that are prevalent in other communities. While there are a few libraries in our community, students do not always have the means or transportation to access them. In many cases the classroom library is the only library students have access to. Many of my students are always asking when we will have new or interesting books to read.
My Project
We will use the fiction and non-fiction paired texts as part of our on going units of study. We will use these texts to explore new topics that will be made accessible through a differentiated level for students. Students will also increase their love of reading and practice reading skills with high-interest reading materials.
Students will see the Gary Soto book set as a culturally relevant author study.
Their culture and customs will be reflected in our readings. Having access to a variety of current books and authors will increase students' enthusiasm towards reading. They may see an interesting topic or new author that will push them towards a life long love of reading.
