This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
When was the first time you saw a person in real-life playing an instrument? Do you remember the awe of seeing and hearing a real person making music right in front of you? Did you feel a desire to try it yourself? Introducing music and instrumental music with young children reinforces math concepts like counting, reinforces concepts of print and literacy, while at the same time teaches them creative skills that come into play in countless situations.
Often in school, we create an artificial separation between the arts and subjects like math and reading, but I would like my students to be able to incorporate math and reading while learning to play different instruments.
I have already begun to teach the students about vocal music and Solfege, as well as begun using small percussion instruments. These recorders and harmonicas would allow them to start working on their breathing and breath support, as well as build their fine motor skills and coordination. Learning an instrument is also something that students from low SES would likely not have access to, so it would create more equity in their education with that of more affluent students.
As a bonus, music is a great literacy strategy for ESL students because it shows more context and limits vocabulary into more manageable chunks. Learning different instruments would also allow for multilingual students to create songs in different languages.
