Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has the basics for our community garden but need more resources to get it up and going so that it can continue to flourish year after year. We currently have the garden beds and some soil in place, now we just need the rest. To help them see the connection through their learning is the best way to teach in my opinion.
As Gertrude Jekyll says, “A garden is a grand teacher.
It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust.”
We will utilize the geraniums to attract the live butterflies to help attract pollinators. The ladybugs and praying mantises will eat the pests in the garden. The seeds will show students the start of a plant life cycle, while the tropical plant bundle and mature plants will show the middle and end of the plant life cycles.
One of our Science standards is ecosystems and the interactions between those ecosystems. The terrarium habitat for the frogs and the Venus fly traps will also show students the different interactions between the plant and animal worlds.
