My Project
Each year 150 of our eager 2nd grade students participate in outdoor learning experiences geared for hands-on exploration of plants, pollination, insects, and so much more.
These unique gardening projects include, but are not limited to, growing and harvesting vegetables, growing California native wildflowers, and cultivating Mason Bees.
Through these life-changing experiences, these budding botanists learn how to care for and protect our beloved natural environment. Our amazing garden is used for a variety of functions, and students take pride in maintaining this colorful and enchanting area of our school campus. Learning how to care for the environment, and all it has to offer, is of extreme importance in today's society, while being able to create and grow a garden of vegetables and/or wildflowers is both enriching and valuable. Of course, learning and understanding the importance of pollination is key to the survival of the human race. The scholars raise Mason Bees in the garden each year and during their studies learn about the numerous species of bees living in North America. A wonderful addition to our already thriving garden would be a worm factory composting system. Currently, as a part of their gardening experience, the scholars learn about the importance of composting in our garden and they have been using a traditional tumbling composter with great success. Vermicomposting is an exciting way to learn about composting and the importance of diverting waste from our landfills. The best part is that the compost that they generate will go right back into our gardens! Finally, each year the scholars plant numerous seeds into plastic seedling pots that will be transplanted into our raised beds. Using soil block makers eliminates the need for plastic seedling trays and the scholars will learn that there are alternatives to using plastic materials in our gardens.
