Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Growing knowledge for nature, true compassion for contributing to the school community, and authentic learning through interdisciplinary activities for all our students, are some of the goals of our Environmental Club. With the school comprised of students in grades ranging from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade and a total population of approximately 1,000 students, we are constantly using the garden space as an outdoor classroom to expand on learning.
Located in an urban setting, students and teachers alike are always in search of equipment and supplies that will make our school achieve successful outcomes that will benefit all the stakeholders involved.
By planting a variety of items in our school garden, we have created a forum and place which allows for our students to bond and create relationships with nature and the community, while actively supporting our Enchanted Garden. The middle school students in particular, are looking to create a aeroponic growing system which will allow them to have a greater understanding of sustainability and agriculture.
My Project
My students from kindergarten to eighth grade will get to explore, wonder and compare how the plants grow weekly using an aeroponics, and the hydroponic. This system which includes an herb seed pod kit, a greenhouse plant such as Italian herb seed are some of the needed items requested in this project. Those systems are the most efficient and productive way to grow indoors. This project will allow the students to make real-life connections with science, along with building an understanding of plant life and animal species.
The aeroponics and grow lights will be used to grow plants during the winter months.
The AeroGarden Kit will be part of the system and will used to demonstrate plant life cycle in a closed system.
For that reason, the need and importance of the "Aeroponics" will be critical for the learning about agricultural systems. Also they will provide the students an opportunity to demonstrate different living conditions among three different growing systems within the classroom indoors.
