My Project

The raised garden bed, gloves, and tools requested for this project are needed for a current work in progress! The outdoor garden classroom at our school has been taken over by weeds, leaves and needs some love. Currently we have a seed starter mini greenhouse in our classroom. A few plants have been moved to bigger pots. Now we are getting ready to move them outdoors to a raised garden bed! We are requesting garden tools as well as a raised garden bed. These will be used by all students on a rotation and managed by an adult in the building.

The goals for this project will not be to just revamp the outdoor classroom but make it a useful place to grow vegetables for students to try with their lunches!

We would like to be able to make the garden large enough to provide community members with fresh produce in our Free Little pantry that is located behind our school building as well. In Northwest Arkansas there are more than 70,000 men, women, senior citizens and children that face hunger every day. The number of hungry people has increased in the past years, but there are many resources in our community that continue to fight for everyone to have access to nutritious food to eat.

My students are highly motivated by this project. Our principal is supporting this project by connecting us with the Food Corps nonprofit. A quote from their website is, "Every child could benefit from this… Every child should have that experience to dig in the dirt and to plant something and see it grow." We are excited to partner directly with schools to teach kids about growing, cooking, and eating nourishing food, and advocate for broad investment in food education.
