My Project

Food Studies is a dynamic, interdisciplinary semester-long course designed to empower students to become food citizens—individuals who understand that their food choices impact not only their own health but also the health of their communities and the environment. Through engaging, hands-on lessons that integrate science, ELA, and social studies, students explore the deep connections between food, culture, sustainability, and systems of power.

Learning in this course is multifaceted.

Students read and analyze powerful writing about food, agriculture, and environmental justice; participate in cooking labs that deepen understanding through preparation and tasting; and connect with farmers and food producers through field trips to local farms and institutions.

At its core, this course is about compassion. Students will learn to see the world through the eyes of others by studying food insecurity and working directly on projects that serve those in need. This year, our class will grow mushrooms with a kit and donate them to our school’s food pantry, which supports over 200 families. Through this hands-on project, students will experience what it means to feed others with dignity and empathy.

To deepen their understanding of compassion and community care, students will also participate in a year-long service-learning project focused on building and sustaining our school’s food pantry. These experiences will help students reflect on how small acts—like growing and sharing food—can alleviate suffering and create real change.

We will measure students’ understanding of compassion through reflective writing, meaningful class discussions, and the level of engagement in their service work. Their ability to express empathy, think critically about food systems, and act with purpose will be clear markers of success.

Your support helps equip students with the tools they need to become thoughtful, caring change makers in their communities.
