My students need sight word and word family activities to enhance their reading and automaticity. My students also need math activities to help them with counting skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom consists of students coming in and out while I work with them in small groups with a specialized instruction. My goal is to get my students as close to goal before the end of the year, but can be challenging because of the wide variety of skill sets within my students.
Our school is a K-2 school with many low-income families.
I currently have students in kindergarten, first, and second grade on my caseload. The students are great, and most of the time are very hard-working. Although they work hard, they frequently become frustrated because the work can be difficult for them, which makes them not enjoy school. The students are often excited to come work with me in a small group, so I try to make the learning fun and engaging.
My Project
The students will be able to do many of the word family and sight word activities I am requesting. The students will learn the basic skills of reading, such as those high frequency words we see in reading everyday. The students will not only be able to read those words, but learn to write them as well. The word family wheels are a great activity for students to learn automaticity while reading. The math activities will help students to identify numbers and count various objects, as well as learn simple addition and subtraction problems. Many of the skills I am hoping to address with these activities will help strengthen the foundational skills to help the students as they move along the grades.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom in a variety of ways.
First, I'll have activities that will help to address the wide range of skill sets within my caseload. The activities will also improve my classroom by giving me new activities to do with my students. They have been doing many of the same activities since fall. I am also hoping that with the new activities it will help to promote a fun learning environment to help shape my student's perspective on school and learning
