This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our third graders in the South Bronx are a vibrant, curious group of learners who love asking questions, exploring new ideas, and getting hands-on with their education. Many of our students live in a dense urban environment where access to green spaces and fresh, natural experiences can be limited. Inside our classroom, I want to create a space where they can connect with nature every day — to grow not just plants, but also their confidence, responsibility, and scientific thinking.

Through this project, we hope to bring hydroponics kits and air plants into our classroom.

Hydroponics — growing plants without soil — will allow students to explore life science concepts up close, watching roots form and plants thrive in water-based systems they set up and care for themselves. Air plants, which grow without soil, will help students learn about different types of plants and ecosystems while adding beauty and calmness to our learning space.

These materials will give students a chance to:

Conduct hands-on experiments about plant growth, water cycles, and ecosystems.

Learn about sustainability, food systems, and the future of farming.

Build responsibility by caring for living things daily.

Experience the calming mental health benefits of greenery in their environment.
