Science rarely gets the attention it deserves. It's either taught as a separate subject, independent of everything else, pushed to the end of the day, or worse yet, completely ignored and forgotten. I firmly believe that many of the skills taught through science play a vital role in the continuing development of student's reasoning and problem-solving skills. Observing carefully, looking for patterns, recording data, analyzing results, changing variables, maintaining constants, forming hypothesis; these skills will not only serve those individuals interested in science, but all students. Analyzing a problem, determining a viable solution, being able to put a strategy into effect, and interpreting the results are skills associated with successful students and successful people. Whether a person trying to design a new invention or figuring out how to make an investment, people need reasoning and problem-solving skills. I want my students to have these skills! I want to further develop my students´critical thinking skills, while having fun at the same time. My great idea: plants in the classroom! Students will all receive a seed and pot and start figuring out how best to make their individual plant grow. I will stress careful observation through the use of magnifying glasses and plant journals. I will ask them to develop educated strategies based on results and their ongoing research of their plant needs. This project will not only cover science, but will require my students to read about their plant: research information about how to best make their plant grow, measure the capacity of water and other substances they add to their plant, measure the pH levels of their soil. This project will be ongoing throughout the year and will provide my students with numerous opportunities to discover new ideas, practice reasoning skills, and have fun in the classroom. My proposal is for two plant starter kits, which include the necessary seeds, planting pots, and planting soil for this project to become a reality. Also, the proposal requests a pH meter, for those students who will definitely want to take their project to the next level by studying the content of their soil. With your help and generosity my students from Chicago's under-resourced neighborhood of West Englewood can be well on their way to developing the skills they will need to be successful students and thinkers!
