Do you remember the excitement you felt as you began to read? My students are eager to practice the skills they are learning with great books.
I teach very diverse children who are just beginning their journey as readers.
Our school has a high number of students who are living at or under the poverty line and have limited access and experience with books at home. My classroom is an inclusive classroom environment where I meet the needs of students across a wide range of abilities.
My Project
I have requested books that are long time favorites of young children. I have chosen books I know my student will love and excitedly want to read again and again. Through these books my students will be able to continue the development of their text awareness, decoding skills, comprehension, fluency and LOVE OF READING.
My children are excited to read and I want to maintain that momentum by providing them with great children's literature that is going to keep them interested during our Reader's Workshop time. Students will quickly select these books during Reader's Workshop when they practice read to self and read to someone else. My students have been practicing choosing books that are a "right fit" and these books are definitely going to be the new favorites!
This project will give students with limited access to high quality children's literature great books to keep them engaged during Reader's Workshop.
These books are going to be the books that help ignite a lifelong love of reading among my students.
