This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a K4-8th grade charter school in Milwaukee. Our school has over 800 students of which 96% are receiving free or reduced-price lunch. I have a high number of English Language Learners in my classroom.

Within my Project Lead the Way class, I teach all 5th and 6th grade students and have an elective class for 7th and 8th graders.

Project Lead the Way is a project-based curriculum that allows students to explore math and science in a different way than their regular classroom. Students are faced with real-world problems which they are expected to work collaboratively to solve. The class also allows them to be creative by using the engineering design process.

My Project

These materials will help create a successful school garden. With the pots and gardening tools, students will learn how to care for plants and how to harvest them during the summer. The gloves and kneeling pads will allow students to weed and groom the garden to allow plants to thrive.

The goal of the school garden is to provide students with an additional learning space outside.

Due to the urban environment that my school is located, the middle school students do not spend much time outside. This garden space is a perfect location for students to learn about growing plants, taste vegetables they may have never tasted, or enjoy the wildlife that the garden will bring to the school. With the materials, students will experience firsthand the joys of gardening.
