My Students

Would you rather learn new information by someone telling you about it or would you rather explore multi-sensory aspects of the information and have someone guide you? My classroom is one in which we EXPLORE the material!

The students in my rural high school are bright and full of potential.

They show eagerness to learn, but often get frustrated by lack of resources. The students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, from the middle class to poverty stricken. Finding common ground in the science classroom is often a challenge, but the students are generally cooperative.

My Project

Worksheets, worksheets, WORKSHEETS! Students get completely bored with worksheets and teachers get frustrated with grading them. My students need a set of plants and growing system for an in-depth study of genetics. These materials will allow me to lead the class in a hands-on exploration of plants, genetics, and ecology. Multiple levels of learning will be achieved and students will have the opportunity to formulate their own questions, explore possible solutions, and develop a deeper understanding of the concept of genetics. By using the lab activity, students will achieve the much needed practice that a worksheet would provide, but with greater engagement in the content.

Donations to this project will provide students the opportunity to cement their learning of the concept of genetics in a fun, exciting way.

Students will have an opportunity to behave as real scientists and will develop skills that will aid them in other subject areas, as well as real-life situations.
