This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from all across the world to learn science and English with me in the most diverse county in the world. When they arrive in September, I want them to play a key role in personalizing our classroom by adding their own personal flair. And I know no better way to make a place more welcoming than to fill it with plants!

Students will "adopt" a plant, repot it, decorate a new pot with messages and art, and distribute them around the school.

Our school will be greener, the air will be cleaner, and they will see a bit of themselves in each classroom they walk into. They will be the caretakers of these plants, documenting their growth. It is a way they can learn new words like "care" and "growth," the names of plant parts, and start to learn the language and skills of measurement and observation.

I want my students to feel like they are the stewards of our school. Tending to their adopted plant and their personalized pots will make this a welcoming space where they feel ownership and belonging.
