My students need gardening supplies in order to manage our 6 garden beds. The shed would give us a place to store our materials in order for us to maintain the beds on a consistent basis.
My students are highly engaged in hands-on science where they can ask questions and explore. They are better able to learn and retain information if they can participate in problem solving and critical thinking activities. I work in a rural, high-poverty district where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students have limited hands-on, problem solving experiences outside of the classroom. We also have a high percentage of IEP students or students who require Title I service. Science is the best part of the day for for many of my students who struggle in other subjects. Science offers a way to include more students as part of a group as they learn and explore together.
My Project
In 2016, two community members secured the necessary materials to build 6 above ground garden beds at our school. These beds give students hands-on experiences when planting, maintaining, and harvesting plants. The shed will allow us to properly store the necessary tools we need to maintain our beds and keep the area around them safe for everyone.
Students who are actively engaged in high quality, meaningful work will be more excited about attending school which has the potential to increase student attendance, lower behavioral referrals, and encourage more students to choose science based careers.
By participating in the growing and caring for our gardens, students will also take responsibility for their environment and develop a strong sense of community. They will be caretakers of the gardens and our school property and can feel a sense of accomplishment when they are able to harvest and enjoy the variety of vegetables the garden produces.
