We live surrounded by snow, by sea, by tundra. Plant life is covered by foot upon foot of snow in the winter. My students love to watch things grow- people, animals, plants- and during the long winter I want them to learn even more about not only growing, but nurturing plants.
My students are active, intelligent, caring 1st graders who love nature and being outside.
However, where we live gets very cold, and sometimes we don't see the sun for days- in the winter we may only get 2 or so hours of light. My students love taking care of each other and would grow as people if they were given the chance to nurture their own little plants in school. All of my students are Title I, and while the world they live in is stunning and unique, I want them to have the opportunity to have other experiences- to grow their minds, and their imaginations.
My Project
My students need an LED grow light, a hydroponic plant starter kit, and two types of plants to grow in our classroom. My students will use the resources I've requested to begin a plant garden. They will learn about the life cycle of a plant, about germination, about what is necessary for plants to live, and in comparison, what is necessary for people to live. They will be able to take pride in their achievement of raising plants, as well as learn about diverse plants not found in our own ecosystem.
Donations to this project will give my students access to ecosystems and plant life they wouldn't otherwise experience.
it will change their lives for the better by helping them feel and be responsible for someone outside of themselves. Additionally, they will learn about opportunities for food cultivation outside of what they have experienced before. This project will help expand my students' horizons, and encourage them to think about the wide world out there!
