Growing Future Gardeners: A Hands-On Seed-to-Table Experience

Help me give my students various heirloom seeds, potting soil, propagation trays and peat pots to help grow seeds.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Russo's classroom raised $167

My Project

My second grade students are curious, energetic, and full of wonder. They love getting their hands dirty (literally!) and learn best through hands-on experiences that connect classroom lessons to the real world. Many of them live in urban or low-resource areas and don’t often have the chance to garden or grow their own food.

We’re requesting heirloom seeds, organic soil, propagation trays, and pots to create a classroom garden where students can learn about plant life cycles, sustainable growing practices, and where their food comes from.

Heirloom seeds will allow us to explore biodiversity and history as we grow vegetables and herbs with unique stories. The soil and propagation trays will help us start seeds indoors, and the pots will allow us to transplant and continue growing them both in the classroom and, eventually, in our school garden.

This project will integrate science, math, reading, and responsibility in a meaningful and engaging way. Students will measure plant growth, observe and record changes, and reflect on the importance of healthy eating and environmental stewardship.

With your support, students will:

-Start seeds indoors in propagation trays using nutrient-rich soil.

-Care for their plants daily by watering, observing, and journaling growth.

-Transplant seedlings into larger pots and learn about plant needs (sunlight, water, nutrients).

-Study the life cycle of a plant, parts of a plant, and the importance of pollinators.

-Taste and harvest herbs and veggies, making the connection from seed to table.

Students will not only gain science knowledge but also a deep appreciation for how food grows. They'll become stewards of the environment and take pride in growing something themselves. This hands-on experience supports academic growth and emotional development.
