Growing Future Environmentalists

My students need materials to do environmental science experiments: light fixtures and lights to grow plants, and water and soil test kits to do it safely.

My Students

"Teach a man to fish," the saying goes, "and you will feed him for a lifetime." Fishing may be a valuable skill for our rural colleagues, but here in the city, teaching our students safe, useful urban gardening practices is a far more applicable goal.

My students attend a K-8 school in an urban center in the Midwest.

The majority come from the school's immediate neighborhood but many are bused in from around the city. My 7th and 8th grade classes are full of big personalities, deep thinkers and daring dreamers. They are very diverse in every way except one: over 95% qualify for free or reduced lunch. My classes have all kinds of learners, from kids who take fantastically detailed notes to those who prefer to write a rap or draw a picture to illustrate a concept. They are social but hard-working, and they all like to eat.

My Project

These resources will help my students learn how to grow the food they want to eat, anywhere, all year long. We are fortunate to have a large community garden in front of the school where students grow, care for, and harvest vegetables for much of the year. But in the late fall, winter and early spring months, little will grow outside and my students need equipment to begin experimenting agriculturally indoors. During the cold months, students will learn to grow food for themselves indoors while getting hands-on experience with ecology, horticulture and the scientific method. As we approach spring, students will learn valuable skills that will help them one day start gardens or businesses of their own: starting seedlings from seed, testing water quality, and testing and altering soil nutrients for optimal growing conditions.

Inspired by the a video, my students could create edible walls, start cooking classes, or pursue any other interest!

I know from personal experience that growing, caring for, and eating your own vegetables can be a transformative educational experience. It can open students' eyes and imaginations, not only to new career options, but also to personal, community, and planetary health.
