My students attend a K-8 school in an urban center in the Midwest. The majority come from the school's immediate neighborhood but many are bused in from around the city. My 7th and 8th grade classes are full of big personalities, deep thinkers and daring dreamers. They are a very diverse bunch in every way except one: over 95% qualify for free or reduced lunch. My classes have all kinds of learners, from kids who take fantastically detailed notes to those who prefer to write a rap or draw a picture to illustrate a concept. They are social but hard-working, and they all like food and outdoor lessons--hence my focus on gardening!
