My students need an Aquaponics system to interactively learn major STEM concepts and to develop and engage in Science and Engineering practices while exploring real-world issues and solutions.

Nestled between the congestion of the 710 freeway juncture and a busy neighborhood park, sits a school with low socioeconomic students critically thinking, creating, communicating and collaborating. Despite the constant pressures of unaffordable housing, overcrowding and violence in the neighborhood, the forty-four eighth grade students and their respective families come to school eager to learn and grow.
My scholars are stellar examples of thriving despite the challenges!
They are overcoming language barriers, learning disabilities and policy changes to grow into global citizens. They possess admirably strong work ethics and an overall helpful/willing spirit which motivates me to curate the most meaningful learning experiences possible! They contribute to their learning space by actively engaging in eighth grade Science, Math and Art lessons through the use of technology and the engineering process. There are two cohorts of students that rotate into my classroom everyday. Students are engaged in real-life problem solving, practical application of standards, learning coding/programming and preparing to showcase their work to the community through various multi-media platforms.
The Aquaponics system will serve as a classroom investigation where students will work in teams to grow purposeful produce. The year long investigation will allow students to have a purposeful reason for collecting data, using data and designing solutions based on the data. Students will develop twenty-first century skills, engage in a Project Based Learning experience and see the interconnectivity of STEM and STEAM concepts.
Students will actively learn about the major eighth-grade science concepts such as energy, ecosystems, sustainability and human impact.
Instead of passively reading about these topics, students will explore them in depth and present their products to the community in a variety of ways.
