Growing Environmental Stewards

Help me give my students a desktop aquaponics kit and materials for composting and soil testing so that they can see firsthand the interdependence of living things, soil, and water.

My Project

We have a school garden at BWM school because the students felt it would make our school feel like a true, welcoming, place of learning. Four years ago, 8th grade volunteers worked for a year to design a garden and raise money for it. More than 80 kids helped with the installation and even more chipped in with upkeep.

Today, nearly 300 kids a year participate in our new sustainability elective and I want to deepen their experiences and love of gardening and the Earth.

They've asked repeatedly about aquaponics and this table top kit will allow them to set up the system and maintain it on their own. Having fish (and more plants!) in our classroom will foster questions and discussions about the interdependence of nature.

The composting lab, thermometer, and soil test kits will help us grow a healthier garden and also help kids see that green thumbs don't happen by chance.
