Growing Engineers - A Journey Into Better Morning Work

My students are so much more than just little learners. We are a hard working community of thinkers, dreamers and an inspiration to us all. They are our future. I am excited everyday to see what we can create together as we learn and grow in our classroom family.
Everyday is a new adventure as a first grader, and we all work together to support one another.
Our school is nestled in the country where students come to us from all walks of life. They bring so many different perspectives, backgrounds and schema into our classroom and that is what makes us special.
My Project
First graders are social, curious, and have a natural love of learning. I can remember my morning work routine when I was in school. Pick up the paper. Color it. Put it in my mailbox. Repeat. Busy work without a purpose.
By using a variety of hands-on materials such as marble track building supplies, water beads, and brain teaser games, students will continue to develop several skills such as; problem solving, fine motor, communication, and additional social skills.
Our mornings are busy in first grade, but when students are engaged in what they are working on at their tables it gets their minds ready for the adventure that is ahead of them that day.
The materials I chose for this project are in the form of games, puzzles, or interesting building materials that they may have never seen before! In my classroom community I teach students about Growth Mindset and what it means to have a "Bubble Gum Brain," one that is always growing, changing, and trying new things as opposed to a "Brick Brain," one that is fixed in doing things one way and not trying something new to solve the problem. These materials provide students with experiences to stretch and grow their brains through a series of problem solving activities that challenge them and engage them.
