My Students
My co-teacher, Ms. Pack, and I teach four classes of striving readers in a suburban community. They come from diverse cultural and language backgrounds. Most are from lower income households. Because of their many differences, we have been able to create a classroom culture of warmth and acceptance. Our collective culture is richer because of their contributions. Ms. Pack and I would like to expound on this with a novel study featuring students with exceptionalities.
Developing an appreciation for the uniqueness of others and themselves, not only builds character, but fosters kindness.
In addition, bolstering their capacity to empathize with others leads to a more positive and uplifting classroom culture. Ultimately equipping each student with the necessary tools to become a productive, considerate, and caring member of society.
My Project
Due to the pandemic, our world has become so very digital. Just last year, students would beg to complete activities on their ChromeBooks. However, recently, we have noticed a new appreciation for pencil, paper, and the printed word.
Having the actual book in hand allows students to revisit the text much easier than a digital copy, thus allowing them to connect to the story at a much deeper level.
In our humble opinion, holding a book in your hand and turning the pages makes reading all the more enjoyable. We feel that entrusting our students with the care of our class books creates a feeling of ownership and responsibility.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
