This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

September 11, 2001, is an event that shook our nation to the core. The students I serve today were far from even being born. This event, like other historical events that have occurred not only in our nation, but in the world, should not be looked over or just observed for one moment of silence. No.

Today's students must learn about and grow empathy for the events of yesterday that affect their today and their tomorrow.

The novel, Ground Zero, by Alan Gratz is a novel that does just that. It places the reader in the shoes of both "sides" of the story. As I read aloud, my students will follow along in the copy you will so graciously purchase, one for each of my students. All of my students, low or high readers, will have access to this grade level reading text because I will be reading it to them, giving them the opportunity to see what words should sound like, especially my below level readers. It's a win-win situation: my students practice their reading and grow their empathy for the terrible events that happen on 9/11. Thank you for partnering with me in funding this project.
