Growing Compassion: A School Garden and Farmers Market Initiative

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is starting a journey to cultivate a garden and foster compassion and community spirit among students. With support from Donors Choose, we will equip students with gardening tools, seeds, and equipment to create a vibrant school garden. This living classroom will teach students lessons about empathy, compassion, and giving back to their community by starting their own farmer's market.
Seeing the World Through the Eyes of Another:
Students will engage in activities requiring cooperation, patience, and understanding. They will appreciate the efforts and perspectives of their peers as they work together to nurture and maintain the garden. Community discussions will help students explore how different people in our community experience food scarcity and the challenges of affording fresh produce. This fosters empathy as they understand others' struggles and the importance of community support.
Fostering Community Well-being:
The garden project will culminate in a student-run farmers market, where produce grown by the students will be sold at affordable prices to the local community. Students will learn about the impact of food insecurity and how providing fresh, affordable produce can improve nutrition and well-being in our community. Through this market, they will experience the fulfillment of helping others and understand their contributions in supporting community health.
Measuring Success in Understanding Compassion:
Success will be measured through pre- and post-project surveys to assess changes in students' attitudes and understanding of compassion. Students will also participate in reflective writing assignments and group discussions. The quantity of produce sold, student involvement, and community feedback will serve as indicators of success.
Our school garden and farmers market project instills values of empathy, compassion, and community service in our students. By supporting this project, you nurture the hearts and minds of our future generation.
