Self discovery leads to lasting learning.
In first grade classes across Utah, the core emphasizes Reading and Math. Science is included in the core, but does not get a lot of attention. Thus, the district, as it needs to prioritize its funds, is unable to fully fund science materials to support a healthy first grade science program.
There is a great power in teaching young children sciences and I am anxious to provide for my 21 students positive and effective science learning moments.
One of the main Science topics for first graders in Utah is plants. A few of our learning goals related to plants include: Investigate plants and plant growth, observe and draw pictures of plants, observe and describe plants as they grow from seeds, investigate and report conditions that affect plant growth.
I have envisioned my 21 first graders learning more about plants by using a root farm viewing case. This will allow these students to watch over a period of time a plant grow and develop, both above the dirt and beneath. Plus, it is using plants they are familiar with such as carrots, onions, and radishes; thus making this experience real for them.
What a simple, yet powerful way for them to learn about plants while developing positive attitudes about science!
