My students need many opportunities to learn through play. Through this generous donation of dress-up sets, dishes, puzzles, pattern blocks, etc., the children will learn about playing a role, their letters, their shapes, and how to use their imaginations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Pre-Kindergarten. I think that Pre-K is very unique grade level. My youngest student is 3.9 years old, and my oldest is 4.9 years old. The children come from very low income homes. Most of them speak Spanish at home. Some speak Bengali. And some speak English. Some of the non-English speakers do speak a bit of English and some speak no English at all. This is the second year of NYC Mayor's Mike DeBlasio's Pre-K initiative. This initiative guarantees that every four-year-old in New York City will have access to this life-changing educational opportunity, with roughly 70,000 children expected to enroll.
My Project
By donating to our project, you will give the youngest students opportunities to learn with and explore toys that they do not have at home.
Imagine a child that picks up a Melissa and Doug Shapes Sounds Puzzle puzzle in school.
As a child works independently, this wooden, 9-piece peg puzzle says the shape name of each piece when it is placed correctly in the puzzle board! It also reveals a picture of a familiar object. So children will learn the names of the shapes AND discover a picture of a familiar object that matches the shape. Now, imagine TWO children working together with this toy. For the first time ever (for most), both are learning about shapes, both are gaining independence, and both are interacting with a friend. The gains that are made with just THIS ONE toy are tremendous.
Now, let's imagine what can happen when a student who loves cars and trucks discovers Melissa & Doug Lock and Roll Rescue Garage in his new classroom. The child will look forward to that toy so coming to school will be a joy and separating from home will not be as difficult.
Lastly, perhaps a shy little child who is having trouble initiating play with a new friend sees Melissa & Doug's Abby & Emma Deluxe Magnetic Dress-Up Set. It is so pretty. The bright colors and designs remind her of the doll her Abuela bought for her. Slowly, because her desire to try this toy is so strong, she approaches the child who is playing with the toy and asks, "Can I play with you?" A friendship has been formed and confidence gained - for BOTH children.
Imagine how much the children will learn, how many lives can change, if you fulfill this teacher's lengthy, opportunity rich wish.
