This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school in the heart of New York City; most of my students have never planted a seed, if it wasn't at school. We are very fortunate to be embarking on a new school-community project, to update and revive our garden. We have entered in to partnership with many local community organizations.
I am hoping to get some garden tools donated so that I can take my students out this spring and begin the process of transforming this lost area into a outdoor learning environment. Imagine all that can be learned from working outside in a garden. Students will learn first hand about plants, wildlife, native and non-native species, planting and harvesting, how to care from plants and more. Imagine the pride they will gain as they work with their community and create a place of pride and accomplishment.
This project will provide years of learning and loving for the students of my school and further involve the community in creating a place where students and families can come and enjoy the great outdoors.
