Growing a Love of Reading

My students need copies of Jason Reynold's A Long Way Down. This story is relevant to their lives and it is told through poetry. My hope is that this story will create an access point.

My Students

The students that I teach are an incredible group of kids. They are hard workers and always eager to try new ideas to benefit their learning. Our students come from a low income community. Our school is both a STEAM school and a Title I school.

Our students passions are incredible and invigorating.

They work hard, put forth great effort, and are always eager despite lacking in resources. Their potential is amazing. Many of my students are ESOL students, many of whom were displaced from Hurricane Maria, I am hoping to better meet their needs through the use of individual technology. These kids are amazing and driven. Given the right tools they could be unstoppable. Please help them obtain the tools they need.

My Project

It is difficult to continue to read stories that have no representation of yourself or the world around you. My students face this battle daily. My hope is to have students find a voice that is relevant to their everyday lives. The power of a story with representation is incredible.

There is a need to grow student's love of reading and poetry.

These forms that once felt inaccessible become more accessible through Jason Reynold's narrative. These books will help to develop my students as readers. I truly believe that this book will be the door to the world of literature and poetry. This story is important and relevant to my students. I want them to read something that they can relate to. Please help my students access these titles.
