Growing a Love for Science With a Seed Starting Club
Help me give my students supplies to create a seed starting club on campus so students can learn to propagate plants and take home vegetable and herb starts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It's often said that as we grow older, we begin to get less curious. My students defy this. As the school year goes on, they get more curious as they make connections between concepts and start looking at the world in new ways.
My students are curious and creative problem solvers who make insightful observations as they engage with and learn from each other.
I teach at a Title I school with a diverse population of students who show me every day that, if given the chance, they will rise to the occasion.
My Project
If I've learned one thing as a science teacher it's that students love to grow plants. Every year without fail it is one of the most popular things we do, with students eagerly checking their seeds each day to see if they've grown.
This year I want to create a seed starting club on campus so students can learn to propagate vegetable and herbs starts which they can take home to grow or distribute to members of our community.
With the donated supplies, students will learn how to use soil blockers to create blocks of soil which hold together and can have seeds planted directly in them. In addition, students will create self watering tray systems to keep our soil blocks moist and plant starts healthy. Once our seed starts are ready to be planted, students will be able to take them home to plant along with small ziplock bags of nutrient rich worm castings from our classroom worm bins.
Aside from learning about how to propagate plants, this club will also help build both community and a love of science on our campus by creating a space for students to explore the wonderful world of gardening together.
