Growing a Kindergarten Community

My students need a large area rug and writing center to allow them to establish structure, routines, and organization during instructional times.

My Students

"Most of what I really need to know about how to live, what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten." Kindergarten lays the foundation for a lifetime of social, emotional and academic learning. This project would allow us to build foundations by building a community of lifelong learners.

My classroom is filled with 25 eager five-year-olds.

Many of these children are just beginning their journeys away from mom and dad. Some have never seen the inside of a classroom and have never walked in a line, and most have never held a pencil. These precious learners are getting ready for their lifelong path of learning. But before they can begin their trek, they must have solid foundations. These foundations must be built in an environment of community, organization, mutual respect, and routine. Our school and district places a heavy emphasis on social and emotional learning interconnected with all core academic subjects. Our school is the largest elementary school in the district nearing almost 900 students. With so many individuals, community, respect for personal space, and organization is an essential skill for these kindergartners.

My Project

The area carpet will provide the students with a routine meeting place and a specific seating arrangement. The clearly defined spots on the carpet will encourage students to respect personal space and promote an organized and orderly classroom. Most of the kindergarten whole group teaching will occur from this common meeting place. Our day will begin and end with students in their designated spots on the carpet. This will help us build community and cooperation. With such a large class size, it is important that each student have his/her own space to focus on learning. The table writing center will be a place to organize the shared classroom supplies that we use for centers and other group activities. Sharing supplies can be difficult, especially for very young students. Having all of the supplies neatly organized will promote community responsibility for keeping the materials organized so they are available for others to use.

In years past, I have used a variety of techniques to provide a meeting place for my students.

I have tried carpet squares that move from one place to another and tape that ends up being ripped off. Donations to this project will allow my students to have a designated spot where they can focus on one thing: LEARNING! Our carpet spot would give us a place to build relationships, trust, and a sense of team in the kindergarten classroom.
