I am teaching a delightful class of curious first and second graders, some of whom have special needs. These students frequently seek multi-sensory materials and social interactions to aid in their learning process.
My students collaborate well and cheer each other on throughout the day as they understand we are all diverse learners and our goal is to make growth in learning, even when the learning occurs at different paces.
Our class particularly enjoys performing for one another and theater arts is a perfect way to meet our diverse learning needs as we acquire skills in communication and language arts.
Young children learn most readily through play and social interactions. The beloved Mr. Rogers stated, "Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning." This is especially true if the learning takes place with creative multi-sensory experiences. It is my mission to address different styles of learning and provide opportunities for students to make neural connections in ways that emphasize their uniqueness and strengths.
My Project
My first and second grade students learn best through collaboration with a multi-sensory approach. A Fairy Tales STEAM Kit will provide students with hardcover books, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) activities, as well as puppets to analyze and perform eight different fairy tales in class. Later in the year, we will acquire a puppet theater and make our own puppets as students perform original puppet plays for one another. This Fairy Tales STEAM kit will allow us to get started performing with common stories as we analyze story elements in a unique and exciting way. The kit will allow me to build foundational knowledge and procedures for performances. It will also meet the diverse learning needs of students in my multi-age class and provide high-interest strategies to help develop oral language skills for students with special needs. The Fairy Tales STEAM Kit will address multiple needs in our classroom while providing students an opportunity to learn through play.
