Help me give my students a water garden fish tank to give them something calming to watch in my office as we work through their social-emotional needs.
This will be my second year as a junior high/high school counselor after being an intervention specialist for six years. I am so passionate about my position as our district strives to meet the social-emotional needs of our students.
In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students.
More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn and succeed. My goal is to set them up to be mindful, independent, contributing members to society.
My Project
I want to teach the students that come to my office that although they may face challenges in life, it's important to remember to grow through your experiences.
"Grow through what you go through" is my motto for this upcoming school year.
Now more than ever, given everything that is going on in our world, this is so important to remember. The water garden fish tank will be a visual reminder of this motto as students will be able to enjoy the wonders of this unique centerpiece.
As a school counselor, I see many students on an individual basis for whatever their needs may be - mostly social/emotional. Many of my students like to hold something, or in this case, look at something to calm their minds and control their emotions. I think my students would absolutely LOVE this water garden fish tank! Not only is it great for their mental health, but what a great learning experience for them as well - the amazing process of aquaponics!
